Eufaula Weekend: Grass Dawn & Generation Current
Friday Sept 18 – Sunday Sept 20, 2026 · Lake Eufaula (Walter F. George) · bank, kayak & boat · Friday morning through Sunday evening focus
If the Saturday afternoon thunderstorms cooled the air for an hour, take the gift and keep fishing — the lake did not suddenly turn into October.
Weekend outlook
NWS Eufaula / KEUF (checked ~5:00–5:25 PM CT Sat 9/19): late-summer heat still owns midday. Saturday high near 96°F with a chance of storms; overnight ~71°F. Sunday high ~93°F, patchy morning fog then 40% afternoon storms; light NE breeze ~5 mph. Monday tease still hot (~93°F) with slight storm chances.
Barometer (KEUF): Fri evening ~30.07 in → Sat morning ~30.05 → Sat mid-afternoon ~29.94 ahead of storms → 30.01 by 4:58 PM CT during light rain. Net: slight fall into storm cells, then rebound — treat as unsettled / storm-driven, not a clean multi-day rise. For bass: win the dawn and dusk grass bite, then ride afternoon–evening generation current on river ledges and channel edges when Walter F. George is scheduled to run.
Saturday Sept 19
- Best bite: dawn grass / pads before tournament launch chaos
- Generation window: 12 PM–8 PM CT · 80 MW (as posted)
- Storm cells: sit them out; fish the stain line after
Sunday Sept 20
- Dawn still the shallow money window
- Generation window: 2–8 PM CT · 80 MW (as posted)
- Re-check USACE schedule / recording before launch
Most recent dated: GON Lake Eufaula Fishing Report – August 2026 noted light stain. This weekend’s lakewide clarity is unconfirmed after Sat afternoon storms — expect creek backs / river bends to dirty first if rain was local; main-lake grass flats may stay more fishable.
MANAGER FLAG · no fresh Sept clarity report
Pattern talk (August dated reports — not electronics this week): shallow grass, pads, seawalls, riprap, and bridge cover early/late; mid-depth ledges / channel drops / isolated brush once the sun is up or when current is on.
MANAGER FLAG · no fresh Sept depth-band report — conditional
Elevated at Lakepoint: park tournament calendar lists ABA AFT Div 12 — Sept 19–20 (schedule page updated May 8, 2026; checked Sat 9/19). Expect heavier launch traffic, weigh-in congestion, and contested grass/ledge water near the park.
Generator schedule cheat sheet
Agency: USACE Mobile District — Walter F. George / Lake Eufaula (AL–GA Chattahoochee). Do not confuse with Lake Eufaula, OK. Live pool/outflow checked ~5:20 PM CT Sat 9/19. Schedules subject to change.
| Item | Live / posted | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Pool elev USGS 02343240 / CWMS Elev |
~188.8–189.1 ft NGVD29 (Fri–Sat provisional) | Context only: summer conservation top 190 ft; winter 188 ft |
| Outflow CWMS Flow-Out |
Sat afternoon peaking ~12,000–16,000 cfs; quieter morning ~600–1,600 cfs | Fri evening also showed a release pulse. Soft framing only — never a bite guarantee |
Walter F. George · Sat
- Prioritize main-river ledges, channel swings, current seams
- Pair with dawn grass before launch chaos
Walter F. George · Sun
- Same ledge/current play when units run
- No generation ≠ dead lake — shallow grass/shade still matter in heat
Fri posted (context): 3–4 PM 80 MW; 4–6 PM 160 MW; 6–9 PM 80 MW. Failover recording: (866) 772-9542 ext. 244. Resource Manager: (229) 768-2516. Soft bite language: guides/August reports often note current on ledges helps concentrate feeding fish; never treat MW/cfs as a rule. Stay clear of restricted dam discharge.
How to fish it — bank / kayak / boat
Bank
Highland Park pier and Old Creek Town (City of Eufaula — OA lists no fee for Old Creek Town; confirm live) for pier/shore casting. Early: grass edges, seawalls, riprap, bridges with topwater then soft plastic. Stay clear of restricted dam discharge areas.
Kayak
Old Creek Town landing + quieter city/creek arms. Avoid tournament blast-off lanes at Lakepoint Sat–Sun. After storm cells, fish the clearer edge of any new stain line rather than forcing a dirty back.
Boat
Lakepoint State Park is the hub but expect tournament traffic Sat–Sun. Alternatives: Cheneyhatchee, White Oak, Hardridge, Thomas Mill (WFF) — fees/status change; confirm OA / USACE / Recreation.gov live. Cover grass early; idle ledges when generation is on.
Lure box
Top
- Walking topwater (chrome/bone or shad) — seawalls, bridges, grass points early
- Hollow-body frog (black or white) — pads and matted grass
- Buzzbait (black/chartreuse) — low-light grass edges
Mid
- Medium diving crank (shad or craw) — parallel ledges during generation
- Soft plastic stick or fluke — isolated brush and shade
Bottom
- Football jig + chunk (green pumpkin / June bug) — ledges/rock with current
- Creature / punch bait (June bug / blue) heavy tungsten — thick grass after sunup
Stain/clear match: Shad-colored cranks/spooks on current and channel; green-pumpkin / craw jigs on rock; bluegill-leaning spinner or small crank in grass. August GON: scattered fish — hunt isolated cover, not one magic school.
Bass life stage
Late summer → early fall transition. Water remains hot; fish are not yet in a full cool-water creek push. Expect a split personality: some bass still shallow on grass / pads / vertical cover at low light, others holding offshore structure and waking up when generation turns on. Shad-related fall moves toward creek mouths are the next few weeks’ story, not a confirmed school every cast this weekend.
What’s on the menu: August 2026 GON cited bass feeding on crawfish near rock and a strong bluegill year-class narrative (Capt. Sam Williams); threadfin/gizzard shad remain the most likely open-water forage for ledge fish on a Chattahoochee border reservoir. This weekend: no fresh Sept hatch report — forage unconfirmed beyond seasonal likelihood. Most likely: shad on current/channel + bluegill/craw around shallow rock and grass.
Also hot / also in season
Bluegill / bream
Shallow grass and shade; small beetle-spin / cricket — bank-friendly (Aug report enthusiasm).
Catfish
Heat + shad forage — cut bait or live bait in deeper river holes; respect dam/restricted zones.
Crappie
Still possible on brush/creek timber but not peak spring — soft mention only.
Regs: live-check only — OA freshwater creel & size limits (+ GA regs if fishing GA bank). Reciprocal AL–GA license note: Ala. Admin. Code 220-2-.122 / OA Lake Eufaula page — tributaries not included. Verified pages live Sat 9/19.
